What Is The Meaning Of The Name Jesus?
In this blog, we will look at the meaning of the name Jesus. We will also think about the meaning of this name.
The name Jesus is derived from the Hebrew Yeshua. It means “God is salvation” or “God saves”.
In Matthew 1:20-21, we read the angel’s command to Joseph. The angel said Mary would give birth to a son and Mary and Joseph were told, “name the child Jesus because He will save His people from their sins”.
Jesus’ name matches His role on earth; to become the Savior of the world, and bear the burden of sin.
John 3:17 reminds us again of Jesus’ calling: “For God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. .”
Jesus is the gateway to salvation and it is through Him that we are saved. In John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me.”
Family of Jesus
The birth of Jesus shows us God’s plan unfolding over hundreds of years.
The Gospel of Matthew lists Jesus’ lineage this way: “Jacob gave birth to Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus, who was called. is the Messiah.” Matthew 1:16
Isaiah 9:7 reminds us that:
“He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, set it up and maintain it with justice and reason henceforth and forever.”
His descent from David was foretold hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus.
So He is Jesus, the Savior, and He is also the Messiah, which means “The Anointed One” and comes from the Hebrew mashach.

Meaning of a name
Have you ever looked up the meaning of your name? In the Bible, names have great meaning. There are several examples of God changing someone’s name. God changed Abraham’s name to Abraham as a sign of God’s promise to Him.
“As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. You will no longer be called Abram; Your name will be Abraham. (Morning 17:4-5)
Abram means “noble father” and Abraham means “father of many,” so God gave Abram a new name to symbolize his new destiny. .
Revelation 2:17 says: “To him that overcomes, I will give hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, only the person who receives it will know.”
Getting a new name can be like strengthening our destiny, or agreeing to a promise in our lives.
In John 1, Jesus changed Simon’s name: “Jesus looked at him and said: “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas.” (which when translated as Peter). Peter means stone. Later in Matthew 16:18, Jesus said: “I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.”
There Is Power In Jesus’ Name
Salvation
Acts 4:8-12 reminds us that “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. “
Prayer
When we pray “in the name of Jesus,” we align our will and our prayers with His will. John 14:13 says; “I will do whatever you ask in my name, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
Healing
We ask for healing in the name of Jesus. Mark 16:17-18 reminds us; “In the name of the Master, exorcise demons; they will speak in new tongues;… they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.”
Every Knee Must Bow
Philippians 2 is a wonderful passage, once again showing that the Kingdom of Heaven is never what we expect. Jesus is the first-born of all creation, the first and the last, yet He humbled Himself to earth, taking on flesh to be “God with us”. And because of this, the Bible says; “God exalts Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.”
Jesus, the Savior, is first and last. Alpha and Omega. You and the King.
Finally, let’s pray together.
“Lord Jesus,
Thank you for the wonderful truth about your name and who you are. Thank You for coming down to earth to bring salvation to many people.
Tell me about my name today. Show me what it means. Show me your holy name for me, your plans and purposes for my life.
Thank You for the truth and power of Your name in every area of my life. Thank You that Your name is above every other name, and those names include sadness, loneliness, illness, and discouragement.
I can know the truth of this today.
Amen
