How to draw anime It’s not difficult if you know the basic shaping steps? Let’s find out with ABC Land how to draw anime easy below!
Anime, also known as Japanese cartoons, is very popular in Vietnam. Not only because of the attractive content, the character creation in the anime is also lovely and eye-catching, so it is very popular with girls. Therefore, many people have sought to learn to draw after their favorite movie characters.
For those who already have flowers, drawing anime is really not a problem. However, if you are just starting out, the guide draw anime simple below will be useful to you.
Draw the head and face of the anime character
1. Draw an oval and divide it into 4 parts
This will be the basic layout for the anime character’s head. The proportions don’t have to be exact, but it’s a good idea to create a narrower oval at the bottom because that will be the chin. After completing the oval, draw a horizontal line through its center. Then draw a vertical line through the center of the shape & intersect the horizontal line. Next, you’ll use these lines as a guide for drawing facial features.
If you want the character to have a larger face, expand the bottom of the oval and make it just a little bit smaller than the top. If you want the character’s face to be slimmer, draw the oval bottom part smaller than the upper part. There is no universal standard face for all anime characters, so feel free to experiment with face shaping until you get the results you like.
2. Draw eyes under the horizontal line
The eyes of Japanese cartoon characters are usually larger than normal, accounting for about 1/4 to 1/5 of the height of the face. To draw the eyes, start by drawing a thick upper lash line below the horizontal line on one side of the vertical line. Then draw a semicircle pointing down below the upper lash line and draw the black pupil in the center of it. Next, draw a narrow horizontal line under that circle to form the lower eyelid. Finally, paint a circle around the pupil, leaving some white space so it looks like the light is reflected in the character’s eyes. Do the same for the other eye on the other side of the vertical line.
Tip: Adjust the shape and size of the eyes depending on whether you draw a male or female anime character. For female characters, make the eyes look taller and rounder, adding a bit of thick eyelashes outside the upper lash line. Male characters’ eyes are usually shorter and smaller.
3. Outline the eyebrows on the horizontal line
Draw a long, downward curved line for each eyebrow. Draw them slightly longer than the upper lash line of the eye. Then, highlight the first part of the eyebrow in the center of the face.
If you’re drawing a female anime character, draw your eyebrows a little thinner. For male characters, draw thicker eyebrows to increase the masculinity of the face.
4. Add a nose between the horizontal line and the chin
The anime character’s delicate noses are only discovered when you look at the character from the side. To shape the nose, draw a short vertical line along the center of the face at a point halfway between the horizontal line and the chin. Make this line longer if you want the character to have a big nose.
- The nose is the smallest point on the character’s face.
- The nose will overlap the vertical line you drew. To see it more clearly, color it darker than the vertical line or erase the line around the nose.
- Male characters sometimes have sharper nose lines but not always. If you want your character’s nose to stand out, draw a short horizontal line below the vertical line representing the bottom of the nose. You can also draw a triangular shadow on one side of the nose so it looks like the light is hitting the character from the side.
- For certain anime styles like chibi, you don’t even need to draw the nose.
5. Draw the mouth between the nose and chin
Similar to the nose, the anime character’s mouth is also simple and delicate. To shape the mouth, draw a horizontal line as long as the distance between the eyes. Don’t worry about how to draw lips. The mouth is the second smallest feature on the face after the nose.
Curve the top line if you want the character to smile or down if you want to indicate boredom.
If you want the character to smile showing his teeth, draw an upward curved line below the horizontal line you drew for the mouth. The space between the curve and that horizontal line about half the height of the mouth is long. That distance will be the character’s teeth.
6. Draw ears
If you want the character to have long hair that covers the ears, skip this step. However, if the character design is short, draw a small oval on each side of the head, trying to balance the two sides. Place the top of the ear in line with the horizontal line running through the center of the face, the lower part of the ear in line with the lower part of the nose. Then, draw the earlobes inside both of the ovals just drawn.
Feel free to try different sizes for your character’s ears if you want them to be bigger or smaller.
7. Draw the hair on the character’s head
You choose the hairstyle for the character, but in general, anime hair often has a pointed tail and is divided into many different parts. You can draw short bouncy hairstyles, loose or long shiny hairstyles. Whatever hairstyle you choose, avoid drawing every single strand of hair. Instead, draw large sections of hair, about 4 to 5 large curls at the ends.
If the character’s hair is long, you can draw 2 proportional braids on either side of the head with a pointed end. Or you can draw a bun at the top of your head. In addition, you can add bangs to the character by drawing 3 or 4 different sections of hair on the forehead.
For short hairstyles, you can draw 3 or 4 different sections of hair, swiping to one side of the character’s forehead. Or draw a hairstyle without the forehead and draw a few lines running from the roots to the back of the head so it looks like it is being combed backwards. Besides, you can also draw a chin-length bob, which is divided into several thick sections as shown in the illustration.
8. Erase the horizontal and vertical guides you originally drew
Erase them carefully so as not to accidentally remove any facial features. Ideally, you should use a small eraser when performing this task. When you erase both lines, you’ve finished drawing the anime character’s head and finished face.
Sketch of an anime character’s body
1. Draw the body composition of the stick figure
Use straight lines for the arms, torso, and legs. Arms and torso are of equal length, legs about 1/3 longer. Then draw triangles or ovals for the hands and feet. The hands are 1/5 of the length of the arms, the feet are 1/6 of the length of the legs.
- For the right proportions, draw a stick composition about 7 times the height of the character’s head.
- The arm line starts about 1/5 of the line you drew down for the torso.
- Sketch out the outline of the character’s body in any pose you want. For example, if you want the character to sit, draw their legs slightly bent. If you want the character to wave, draw a curved arm.
2. Outline the general shape of the character’s body
Follow the stick lines you outlined above with rough outlines of your character’s arms, torso, hips, and legs. There is no need to worry too much about accuracy in this part. You just need to shape the body parts using basic shapes.
- Draw ovals for the upper and lower arms, legs, and then, draw a circle at each joint for the knee and elbow. To scale, draw the same length and size for the upper and lower arms. Draw the top leg thicker than the bottom leg.
- For the body, draw a quad that is wider at the top and narrower at the bottom. The top wide corners will become the character’s shoulders.
- For the hips, draw an oval through the intersection of the torso and shins.
- Anime characters are usually tall and thin, but you can experiment with different heights and body shapes.
3. Connect and refine general shapes
Trace the outer edges of the character’s body for a seamless outline. Now let’s start tweaking the different parts of the body to make them more realistic. Once done, you will have a detailed, full sketch of the character’s body with clearer lines.
To join and align the legs, draw around the outlines of each shape, forming a pair of legs (ovals for upper & lower legs, circles for knees and foot drawings). Smooth lines to make the legs look more realistic.
For the upper body, do the same. Round the corners of the torso for the shoulders and draw 2 curves up from the center of the torso for the neck. Then connect the drawn shapes to attach the hips to the torso and upper legs.
Tip: If drawing a male character, widen the chest, shoulders, and waist. If drawing female, narrow the shoulders & waist, widen the hips and round the bust.
4. Erase drawn stick lines and shapes
Erase carefully to remove any unnecessary outlines. In the end, you should have a clean, seamless body shape like the one pictured above.
5. Add character clothes
Just like drawing the head and body, you need to outline the outline first and then go into the details. You can choose any outfit for your character from uniforms to skirts or traditional costumes.
How to draw anime characters with different expressions
How to draw a smiling female anime character
How to draw anime female characters smiling often have the following expressions:
For a smiling face, draw the eyes slightly narrower, invert the curve from the lower eyelid when in a normal state, and draw the mouth a little wider.
How to draw happy female anime characters
The happy facial expression closely resembles a smiling one but is usually drawn with a more defined mouth.
For a happy face, you can do the same drawing as above but make the mouth more open with white teeth and add a little blush just below the eyes.
How to draw a female villain anime character
The villain or main character is an evil person who always confronts the male/female protagonist directly. This type of character usually has very few good facial features. However, not all female villains are bad. You can draw them beautiful but still exude evil.
How to draw beautiful but mean female anime is not difficult. Here is an example:
Draw small pupils and irises with the upper eyelid covering part of the eye. Don’t add a shadow to the top of the iris (if you don’t want the character to have a glare). You should also draw less highlights in the eyes and make them a little smaller for a less friendly look for the villain. Draw the lower eyelid and mouth in an inverted (downward) curve.
Position the lower eyebrows in a wave shape so that the face looks frowning or annoyed. You can draw Hime Cut hair, which adds personality to the evil female character in Japanese cartoons.
How to draw villain anime, going crazy
To make an evil anime character go crazy or angry, sometimes you have to draw the irises and pupils of the eyes very small so that there is a bit of white space around them.
Draw the eyebrows slightly lower in a wave shape like the previous example but with their inner ends slightly raised. Again, don’t draw more shadows on the irises. Instead, focus only on the necessary reflexes.
Draw a mouth with teeth exposed, looking like it’s smiling.
You’ll end up with an anime face with crazy looking eyes and a grinning mouth. The expression is perfect for a villain (although it can be a bit difficult to show this in real life).
How to draw an angry female villain anime
Angry expressions are quite common among characters who play evil characters in Japanese anime, especially when the plan fails.
- To draw an angry face, first lower the upper eyelid and raise the lower eyelid (draw in an inverted curve). Next, draw the pupil and the small black center, without the shading and shadows as in the previous drawing.
- Determine the position of the lower eyebrows like a wavy line.
- Draw a bean-shaped mouth with the edges of the lips slightly curved downwards, exposing the teeth.
