Top Tips on Starting Out on Your Spiritual Journey

Life is too complicated. We make many decisions every day of our lives. We are given options to live by social media, advertising, family and friends, the Bible. So, with all these voices, who should we listen to on our spiritual journey? How do we find answers to life’s big questions? What is this all about? Why am I still alive? What is my reason for existence? Am I even on the right track?

And how do we make sure we’re moving forward, not just going around?

Being a Christian is not about jumping over a fence into a field of paradise where we can lounge around doing what we like. It’s like we’re groping in the dark and suddenly a bright light comes on. Suddenly, we can see everything differently, the whole earth, everyone we meet, and ourselves.

A great quote from CS Lewis reads: “I believe in Christianity because I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because I see everything else through it.” (CS Lewis, “Is Theology Poetry?” The Oxford Socrate Club, 1944 Samizdat University Press, 2014.) To be a Christian is to see ourselves as God sees us, the same way He does. His Son, perfect and sinless. Jesus took on our sins to set us free.

So how do we begin our spiritual journey out of our faith? In this blog post, we’ll look at some tips to start your spiritual journey and how you can strengthen your connection with God.

1. Know That God Wants To Talk To You Every Day

That’s right! You are worthy of His time. Believe that He has something to say to you. Come expectantly. God always said; You are like a radio that constantly transmits loving thoughts to each of us. Coming to spend time in His presence is like tuning us to that frequency and receiving some of His truth.

2. Understand that he speaks in different ways

God speaks to us in many different ways. When I talk about hearing from God in this blog post, I don’t always mean hearing a direct message from God or an audible voice. Sometimes I hear a voice in my head, but other times it might just be a phrase that strikes me. It could be the words of a friend (not necessarily a Christian friend), it could be the lyrics of a song (not necessarily a Christian song), it could be a verse from a book or a verse. in the Bible. God can speak to us through anything, at any time. The question is, are we ready to hear Him?

I remember when I was having a hard time raising my baby and couldn’t find the time to go to God. Phrases from children’s bedtime Bible stories often jump into my eyes, speaking precisely to my situation. I find the mystery of learning to hear God’s voice amazing. The thought that the Creator of the universe wanted to tell me was shocking! Every time we hear His voice, whether it is a vague idea, an impulse, or a feeling, we have the choice to respond or not. All of these decisions throughout our lives make up our spiritual journey. And this brings me to the next point neatly…

3. When you hear something, write it down

When I feel like I’ve heard a word from God, I write it down. Knowing that God wants to actively speak into my life is a precious thing that cannot be wasted. I have a speech file on my computer and I sometimes open it up and remind myself of the things I’ve heard Him say to me. This encourages me on my spiritual journey. Otherwise, the words we receive can be easily snatched away like the seeds in the Parable of the Sower.

“A farmer went to sow seed. While spreading the seeds, some seeds fell along the way, and the birds came and ate them all. Some fell on rocky places where there was not much soil. It grows quickly because of the shallow soil. But when the sun came up, the tree was scorched and withered because it had no roots. Others fell on thorns, and thorns grew and choked them. As for the rest, which fell on good soil, it bore fruit a hundred, sixty, or three times as much as it was sown.” Matthew 13:3-8

Don’t let His words be snatched from you.

4. Slow down

Some days, when I struggle to keep up with the pace of the world, I sit somewhere quiet and write prayers in my journal. It helps me write down my prayers so I don’t get distracted. This makes it easy for me to enter this other kingdom, where the rules are different from the rules of this world, a place where I can be like the tree in Psalm 1, absorbing the fresh water along the way. God’s way.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Look Back

A great quote from Nelson Mandela reads:

“I discovered the secret that after climbing a big hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I’ve spent some time here to rest, to see the splendor that surrounds me, to look back on how far I’ve come. But I can rest only for a moment, for freedom comes with responsibility, and I dare not hesitate, for my long journey is not yet over.” Nelson Mandela, The long road to freedom

Don’t be afraid to look back on your life. Your story and your walk with God are precious. The ways in which God positively affects our lives are gold dust; they are the moment of heaven touching earth. So own them and share them. Tell others about what He has done for you.

You are important to him

So don’t worry about your past and don’t worry too much about your future, just know today that your life is important to God. Your decisions are important to Him, and your life has eternal meaning.

Just come today, spend time with Him, and write down what you hear, big or small. This is how you will go on your way and this is your spiritual journey. Through all the little things, in the end, will make a whole life.
