Please Note: This guide is for WordPress.org blogs. If you are still using a WordPress.com blog, the process may be a little different. To use the full power of WordPress, you might consider migrating your WordPress.com blog to WordPress.org.

When writing a post in WordPress, you will see a few text options on the post edit screen like bold, italicsand strikethrough. But what if you want to change the size of the text? Or color?

There doesn’t seem to be a simple solution to this on the post editor screen, so I’ll show you some workarounds for the sake of completeness. This will involve some light HTML coding, but even if you are a beginner you can still copy and paste the examples I gave to achieve the desired effect.

The method I’m about to show you should only be used if you want to change just a few words in your post. If you don’t like the overall look of your blog’s text, you’re better off just installing a new blog theme whose font type, size, and color you like.

Change text color

At first glance, you probably won’t see an easy way to change the text color. This is because, for some reason, the WordPress developers decided to hide this feature. Here’s how to get it:

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to the “Posts” section and click on the post you want to edit.
  2. Once you are on the post editor screen, click the “Toggle toolbar” button right near your post (circled in red below).

  1. This will bring up some additional options in the toolbar above your post. One of these options is the “Text Color” drop-down box.

  1. Use your mouse to highlight the text you want to change, then click the “Text Color” drop-down box. Choose any color you like.

  1. Once you have selected a color, you can click the blue “Update” button on the right hand side to save your changes.

Change text size

Resizing your text follows the same process as we used to change the text color. This is a bit more complicated though. Here’s how to do it:

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to the “Posts” section and click on the post you want to edit.
  2. Once you are on the post editor screen, click the “Toggle toolbar” button right near your post (circled in red below).

  1. This will bring up some additional options in the toolbar above your post. One of these options is a drop-down box that says “Paragraph”.

  1. Use your mouse to highlight the text you want to change and then click the “Paragraph” drop-down box. Select “Heading 3” to follow this example.

  1. When you select the text size, you will notice that it not only changes the text you have highlighted, but also changes the entire text in that paragraph!

  1. To fix this, we need to access the post’s HTML code. To do this, click the “Text” tab (circled below).

  1. Now that you’re in the “Text” view, you’ll not only see the text of the post, but also the codes that control things like text size. Look at the paragraph where we resized the text. Right before the paragraph, you’ll see this:

  2. Right after the paragraph, you’ll see this:

These codes mark where Heading 3 (the text size we chose in step #4) begins and ends. To change this and change only the size of the text that we want, we need to move those codes to the appropriate position. Check out the screenshots below to see how to do this:

  1. As you can see, all you need to do is copy and paste the code to surround the text that you want to change. Once done, you can click the blue “Update” button on the right hand side to save your changes.

In addition to changing the text size and color, when you click the “Toggle Toolbar” button, you will see several other new features. These include useful things like underlined and indented text, so keep the “Toggle Toolbar” button in mind in case you need to use these features in the future.
