How Can I Make Time For Daily Worship?
Do you find it easy to make time for daily worship in your life?
Life can be hectic and it can be easy to focus on the things of the earthly dimension when they demand our attention. We wake up, think about what will happen to us today, take a shower, get the kids dressed, and get ready for work. Maybe we prepare lunch to take to work, maybe we take the time to exercise. The alarm woke us up, the radio was on, and we checked our phones as soon as we could. Life can be so busy and noisy that we forget to make room to worship God.
Pause
But what if we stop before we start with a pause?
Whether we are going through a great or difficult time, stopping and building a pause in our lives is a great practice.
In John Eldredge’s book Get your life backEldredge talks about taking a one-minute pause, which you can do several times a day, when you stop what you’re doing, inhale and exhale, slowly, say ‘Lord Jesus, I give everything and everyone to You’ (Nashville: Nelson, 2020, p.6). You can say this as many times as you want, ignoring anything beyond your control. And then you can ask Jesus to fill you with Himself more.
When we come to God in this way, we are giving up control of our lives. We’re saying, Lord, You’re on the throne of my life. And the great thing about this one-minute pause is that we can practice it anywhere, finding little times throughout the day where we can stop what we’re doing and get on the air. God wants to participate in every moment of our lives; joys and sorrows and He wants us to live our lives with Him, talk to Him, spend time with Him, and rest in His presence.
Nothing new. The daily act of worship has been passed down through generations.
exam
Examen was originally performed by St Ignatius and passed through the church. You can find a quick guide here. Basically, testing refers to surveying our own lives. It is best done at noon or at the end of the day. There are five steps.
1. Recognize God’s Presence.
2. Review the day of gratitude.
3. Pay attention to your emotions.
4. Pick a feature of the day and pray from it.
5. Towards tomorrow.
In this way, we use the Lord’s guidance to guide us through life’s circumstances, and we take the time to learn from them all; The good and the bad.
Read on for some more suggestions on ways to turn to God during some ordinary moments of the day.
Worship daily throughout the day
Here’s a simple guide to getting through those morning moments. You can use this guide to help you worship God daily through your routine.
Still Being Myself
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
Remember this. Before you get out of bed and before you achieve anything.
turn on the light
‘When I turn on the light and when the light fills this room, I remember You, Lord, when You filled this world with light when You were born in a manger. Lord, today and every day be a light to guide me throughout the day. Amen.’
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
Morning stretch
‘When I stretch, I reach for God. I reach beyond what can be seen, to heaven. I lift my eyes to heaven and ask You to come near me today, Lord. Amen’
“I raise my eyes to the mountain, where does my help come from? My help comes from God, the Creator of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
Cup of coffee
When you make your first drink of the day:
‘Father, who sustains all life. Maintain me today. Fill me with your energy, your love, your strength. Thank You that Your grace is enough for me. Amen.’
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
Ready for the coming day
‘As I get ready for the day ahead, let me know Your presence with me every step of the way. Let me know Your peace surrounds me as I go through the day. Amen.’
“So stand firm, girded with truth, put on the armor of righteousness, and walk with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, by which you can quench every flaming arrow of the wicked. Put on the crown of salvation and take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” Ephesians 6:14-17
Before sleep
‘Father, when I turn off the light and when I hit my head on the pillow, I thank You that You are faithful, that You are with me today, that You have kept me from harm. I surrender my worries and fears right now and say sorry for my sins. I sleep knowing that you will never leave me. Amen.’
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me stay safe.” Psalm 4:8
Worship Him daily
It is so easy. Become aware of ourselves and our habits. Create space to pause. Turn to God whenever we can. Make room for Him to speak into our lives.
