As I meditate on scriptures about God’s love, I am often drawn back to this verse. For some reason, the word AWESOME jumped at me. It challenges me. I often think that God ‘probably’ loves me, but that love is probably the same as ‘He doesn’t mind me’ or ‘He’s a little annoyed with me sometimes’. It was an insecurity that somehow I didn’t score for God. I don’t know have you ever felt that way?

As I read this verse, it occurred to me that God’s love for me (and you) can be a GREAT love. Perhaps God’s love is broader, deeper, and more spectacular than I ever recognized Him. This is worth pondering. If you’re feeling lost, lonely, or simply not enough, come back to this sentence. Remember that God loves you with a great love. He is rich in mercy. He saved you by grace. It’s a good idea, but it seems detached from the life struggles we all face.

So how do we understand God’s love for us during more difficult times? This verse gives us clues. Although God does not send us evil, He overcomes the brokenness of the world to teach us, raise us, and discipline us. Why? Because He loves us as His children and wants to help us grow up healthy. Every good parent disciplines their children. Our Heavenly Father is no different.

If you’re feeling tested by life, don’t take it as proof that God doesn’t like you. Instead, acknowledge the brokenness of our world and see if God can use it to teach you something. Why? Because it will help you remember that you are His child. You are seen and loved. God is with you in whatever trials you are facing.
